Defining Intertextuality

Media Intertextuality

1. Intertextuality

2. Definition The shaping of texts' meanings by other texts.Notion introduced by Julia Kristeva . >Kristeva argued against the concept of a text as a isolated entity which operates in a self-contained manner and states that: "any text is the absorption and transformation of another" Bit Heavy

3. Definition
Every text (and we can insert any cultural object here: image, film, web content, music etc.) is a mosaic of references to other texts, genres, and discourses. </li></ul>More Like It! Where a text alludes to, or references, another text
4. Intertexuality Some texts refer directly to each other – such as in 'remakes' of films, extra-diegetic references to the media / society in the animated cartoon The Simpsons , and many amusing contemporary TV ads. The interpretation of these references is influenced by the audiences’ prior knowledge of other texts.
5. Task The following Simpsons clips make reference to Which important Amercian / International event? Which other popular TV show? Which other British literary genius?
6. Audience Pleasures This particularly self-conscious form of intertextuality credits its audience with the necessary experience to make sense of such references and offers the pleasure of recognition. By referring to other texts and other media reminds us that we are in a mediated reality. This runs counter to the dominant 'realist' tradition which focuses on persuading the audience to believe in the on-going reality of the narrative.
7. Intertextuality and GenreThere are intertextual frameworks (references) at work that are less obvious or direct. The assignment of a text to a genre provides the audience of the text with a key intertextual framework. Each example of a genre utilises conventions which link it to other members of that genre. Such conventions are at their most obvious in 'spoof' versions of the genre.
8. Intertextuality and Genre Intertextuality is also reflected in the fluidity of genre boundaries and in the blurring of genres. In a nutshell, texts provide contexts within which other texts may be created and interpreted. What genre boundaries does The Bill blur?
9. Task List all the intertextual references made in the opening sequence of Austin Powers: Goldmember (Roach 2002) Watch the following clip that summarises what we have just discussed... Any questions?

10. Intertextuality in Music Videos

11. Intertextuality – Music Videos John Stuarts description of the music video as “incorporating, raiding and reconstructing” is essentially the essence of intertextuality. Using something familiar to the audience may generate both potentially nostalgic associations and new meanings. It is perhaps more explicitly evident in the music video than in any other media form, with the possible exception of advertising (and the Simpsons!)

12. Intertextuality – Music Videos Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) Madonna Material Girl (1985)

13. Robert Palmer’s ‘ Addicted to Love ’ (Donovan 1986), alludes to fashion photography and has been parodied many times for its use of mannequin style females in the band fronted by a besuited Palmer. Shania Twain copied it for her ‘Man I feel like a woman’ (Paul Boyd 1999)
</l>Intertextuality  in  Music Videos

14. Intertextuality – Music Videos Robert Palmer Addicted To Love (1986) Shania Twain Man I Feel Like A Woman ( 1999)

15. Intertextuality - Simpsons Almost every episode of The Simpsons contains at least one film reference to a famous film scene. The Simpsons also contains intertextual references to politics, religion – nearly every aspect of social, political and cultural life. The grabs on the following slides are from an episode where the Simpsons referenced Psycho

17. More Heavy Theory In 1968 Barthes announced 'the death of the author' and 'the birth of the reader', declaring that 'a text's unity lies not in its origin but in its destination' - in other words there is no longer such a thing as an original text – very postmodern . This highlights how interpretation lies with the audience – that it is subjective - it is the audience that creates meaning.
18. Something Else to Consider The notion of intertextuality problematizes the idea of a text having boundaries and questions the dichotomy of 'inside' and 'outside': Where does a text 'begin' and 'end'? This again is postmodern

Verisimilitude: what is the definition

verisimillitude is defined as :
  1. 1. The appearance of being true or real  Verisimilitude, in a narrow sense, is the likeness or semblance of a narrative to reality, or to the truth. It comes from Latin: verum meaning truth and similis meaning similar. In a broader sense, verisimilitude refers to the believability of a narrative—the extent to which a narrative appears realistic, likely, or plausible (regardless of whether it is actually fictional or nonfictional).
  2. 2.   An example of verisimilitude is the realistic plot or images of a movie that make it seem quite realistic. The marketing for the original Superman movie suggested “You‟ll believe a man can fly!” and as the audience we did. The world Superman inhabits establishes that he can fly and so feels true and „real‟. The internal logic of the film is never compromised and so we happily accept what we see. In the climax of the film, Superman turns back time by flying the wrong way round the world so fast the world spins backwards. This idea is so preposterous it can barely be believed.

  1. 4. Example  Gulliver's Travels  The story is told in a first person singular with an  eyewitness account. Readers are directly addressed. The background is of the real world Imaginary characters and places with some real world ‘touch’ Juxtaposition of real and unreal world

Preliminary Task: How To Make A Montage

How I made my montage

First I set up the document for A4 international paper, then I downloaded a background from google and dragged the layer on top of the document.  Then I downloaded the pictures which described the vlogger genre, where I put various artists which represent fashion, music, gaming, comedy and more. I saved images of the youtubers and their logos , to represent that . The vlogger genre represents video blogging thus youtube is a big part of that , as vlogging all started with you and some of the more famous youtubers like shane dawson, tyler Oakley and pewdiepie are from there.

Preliminary Task:Magazine Logo Design And Influences

Today i will explain to you the logo of my magazine, and the influences i have taken for it. The influences of my magazine , Project : Vlog came from the magazines and their writers.

TenEighty : written by Paul Neafcy, lydia snapper and poppy dillion.
This is a magazine about youtubers and all the internet culture in itself. Seperate from mainstream media it highlights youtubers. The writers above i wrote about , wrote about fashion and different reviews in the magazine. I like this logo per say since it describes within the logo what it is about with its play button symbol, since it is universally for youtube; thus is all about youtubers.

OH My Vlog : written by Paul lang and Wesley Copeland

This is a British vlogging magazine, where it is solely dedicated to the vlogging phenomenon. Where all sorts of vloggers are stared in like Zoella. The writes above wrote about, they write in depth pages in the magazine. The reason this logo inspires me is, because of its laid back font which gives a feeling of vlogging. Since when you hear the word vlog all you think is, that its going to be homey laid back and one on one with the person in the vlog, since you get to see what that person is in his daily life.

Empire : Ali Plumb, Owen Williams and Kim Newman

This magazine is all about the updates on the movies and the movie culture. Where everything related to all genres of movies are given. The reason why i chose this logo is because of its color since it attracts the audience mostly, and this color will attract them quickly and they will have a look at my magazine. Also because of its bold font.

Empire

Total Film : Gem Seddon and George Wales

This magazine is also on the film culture and all about the movies. I chose this logo as a sort of inspiration because of this logos bright and bold font. I would like to have this type of font, since it would attract the audience.

Vortex : Kenny Smith , Paul Spragg , James Goss and Nicholas Briggs

This is a music magazine, and on all kinds of genre. It gives information about music on the different genres in the world. I chose this logo since it has a bold font with a bright yellow color to attract the audience.

Top Gear : Paul Horell, Jack Rix ,Ollie Marriage, James May ,Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond

This magazine is all about the information on cars, and basically is based on the show Top Gear and what will happen it it and regarding the adventures on the show. I also chose this because of its bold font.

Below is my attempts at a logo made in Illustator

The first logo is made using the text tool using the best font(ever) :Baskervillie Old Face
the one below that is made using blob brush tool.
I used it because i wanted a creative homey feel, which would represent that this is a vlogging magazine.

for those concerned that the magazine research i have done is not relevant

for those concerned that the research i have conducted is not relevant to  my chosen genre must understand that my Genre ,about the internet is quite a recently established one and as such there are very few codes and conventions that can be followed and this allows me creative freedom and stylistic choice but however other magazines in the genre such as TenEighty Magazine and Oh My Vlog! have taken their design influence and aesthetics in many ways from the use of vibrant colours on the pages and an attractive cover that doesn't feature a model to the ease of the content page  and it simplified interface
as we have no pre-existing basis on which to follow and judge this by it is ultimately up to us to decide what kind of image are we trying to create here and thats what i think project vlog is like: a stylish film magazine  but its about the internet ,its technology ,its issues, celebritys, products, production, news, chaos and brilliance
that is why ive chosen to have my majority focus on the film magazines and thats what the other magazines are taking their cues from

Preliminary Task :How to use Adobe Illustrator

For this assignment i had to use the adobe illustrator software and its various features such as pen tool in RGB format.

This is my image before illustrator
taken at my great-aunts house in July of 2015                                                                                                                                                                                                       this is the image after using the                                                                                             various features of the Illustrator  software like                                                                                  the pen tool to trace my face accurately in order to
fill it in with different colours
this makes me look like one of those posters from the seventies
i look like im about to sneeze there

Magazine Assignment Research Update: TenEighty Magazine

Whilst Updating my post And reworking the structuralist layout of my blog i had decided to check  Google for news about my favorite Vlogger Alfie Deyes and in doing so i found  this magazine TenEighty Magazine  an online magazine (with annual print editions) about YouTube and the internet culture and it is Brilliant and  its kicking my project on its head
its beautifully designed , has a kick-ass logo,and a user friendly interface
meanwhile looking at the blog in general  i have to declare that the content is non-existent ,the interface is crap
and also the assignment is giong as well as an oil slick
this forces me to temporarily stop making posts until i get a handle on the situation
its not all that bad though
my teacher Ms. Alaina Khalid has declared that my class has the crappiest blogs this side of the western hemisphere
but don't fear i have some sage advice for you:
